70 years of promoting fairness and equality – Marimekko celebrates Helsinki Pride

Marimekko was founded in 1951 by the visionary woman Armi Ratia. Since the beginning, Armi’s dream was to empower people to be happy just as they are. The Marimekko Spirit has always been grounded on fairness, equality, and inclusivity. This year, we want to celebrate our continuing commitment to these important issues by publishing, alongside special Tasaraita (even stripe) products, a column by rainbow influencer Mona Bling.

The Tasaraita print was born in 1968 when Marimekko designer Annika Rimala wanted to create a collection of cotton jersey clothes suitable for everyone irrespective of age, size, or gender expression. Still today, this stripy classic is Marimekko’s symbol of equality. We will make a donation to Helsinki Pride for every special Tasaraita product sold.

Pride in Progress – milestones towards an equal world

The year 2021 is a special anniversary year for Helsinki Pride, as it has been 50 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality in Finland, 40 years since the removal of homosexuality from the mental health classification, and 30 years since the founding of the Helsinki Pride community. Marimekko congratulates Helsinki Pride!

This year, we are proud to be one of the platinum partners of this rainbow-colored culture and human rights event. The traditional Pride parade will be organized virtually this summer and will spread all over Finland. The parade opens with Pride Week starting on 28 June and you can participate from all over the world until 4 July. Join us in changing the world with Pride.
