Material choices that support longevity and lower-impact design

Marimekko products are designed to stand the test of time and use. We want to extend the life cycle of our products in many ways. Extending product lifetime and reducing environmental impacts begins on the designer’s drawing board, and material choices play a central role in this work. We have defined preferred materials whose share we aim to keep increasing. These include, for example, organic, regenerative and recycled fibers. We also explore and pilot innovative materials without compromising our commitment to timelessness and longevity. We favor certified materials in our sourcing, as they also help improve transparency in our supply chain

Marimekko’s materials strategy and preferred materials

One of the most important ways to reduce our carbon footprint is to further increase the use of lower-emission alternatives to conventional materials. These include recycled, organic, regenerative and innovative materials.

At the beginning of 2021, we introduced our own materials strategy and defined our preferred materials as part of it. We review this list regularly, taking into account as broadly as possible the environmental and social impacts of different materials.

As an example, in 2021, the share of our preferred materials – recycled and organic fibers at the time – was 7 percent. By 2025, the share had increased to 89 percent.
