Who made your clothes? Marimekko takes part in Fashion Revolution Week 2019

Fashion Revolution Week 22–28 April 2019

Fashion Revolution is a global movement promoting a more sustainable and transparent fashion industry and better working conditions. The campaign reminds us that there is a human being behind every garment and encourages companies to bring forth these professionals in different parts of the supply chain.

Fashion Revolution Week commemorates the fashion industry’s most devastating factory disaster to date. On 24 April 2013, the Rana Plaza factory building collapsed in Bangladesh causing 1,138 people to lose their lives and leaving 2,500 injured. The victims were mostly young women.

The positive change towards a more transparent fashion industry starts with a simple question: who made your clothes?

Fairness to everyone and everything

Marimekko’s value “fairness to everyone and everything” crystallises our sustainability thinking. It means respecting people and the environment in everything we do. At Marimekko, we want to create something unique and meaningful. We are not about fast fashion; instead we create timeless, sustainable and functional designs that bring long-lasting joy to people’s everyday lives.

Sustainability in the supply chain is of utmost importance to us. Marimekko products are manufactured by around 70 partners at roughly 120 factories. Approximately 70% of our products are made in Europe and the rest in Asia.

We believe that an open dialogue with our suppliers and other industry players will take us forward in advancing responsible practices. Valuing long-term supplier relationships, we have been co-operating with many of our partners for decades.

We are proud of our global network of skilled manufacturing professionals with years of experience in their fields. In the spirit of Fashion Revolution, it is our pleasure to introduce some of them to you.
