Paths for everyone

In Marimekko’s creative community, doing things together has always been key to innovation and originality. Fostering a culture of creativity began in the early 1950s when Armi Ratia founded Marimekko. Since the beginning, all paths have been open for everyone whether working in design, in stores, at the printing mill or in management.

As equality has been part of Marimekko’s DNA since the very beginning, we are committed to promoting it, among other things, by collaborating with NGOs and charities whose work relates to supporting women and children. One of our partners is Plan and in celebration of International Women’s Week 2020, Marimekko and Plan International are helping 400 young women in Ethiopia and Uganda to achieve their professional dreams by supporting them in developing their IT skills. They will be taught how to use the Internet and office software, programming and image processing. These skills will enhance their ability to gather information and to find employment.

Marimekko and Plan have cooperated also in 2018 and 2019, focusing particularly in promoting rights and education for girls in developing countries as they are often in the weakest position. Our value “fairness to everyone and everything” crystallises our sustainability thinking. Read more about our sustainability commitments and targets.

PS: In honor of strong female figures who have always empowered others at Marimekko, we will highlight this week our female colleagues from all around the world in some of our store windows and in our social media – we are proud of them!
